New Behavioral Health Urgent Care to Open in Charlotte
A new behavioral health urgent care (BHUC) facility is scheduled to open in Mecklenburg County on March 20. Part of the Smith Family Wellness Center located at 616 Colonnade Drive in Charlotte, the BHUC is a partnership between Alliance Health, Mecklenburg County Government and the Steve Smith Family Foundation (SSFF). Daymark Recovery Services, which operates three other behavioral health urgent cares in North Carolina, will be the service provider.
The new BHUC will provide a community-based option to stabilize people experiencing behavioral health crises in a way that reduces unnecessary trips to the emergency room, hospitalizations, and even incarcerations. Behavioral health urgent care can provide rapid assessment of an individual’s situation, medical screening and other care, and referrals for follow-up services. Mecklenburg County provided $2 million for construction of the facility with Alliance and SSFF contributing $800,000 each.
Alliance CEO Rob Robinson said the approach will help to mitigate emergencies tied to mental health as well as prevent incarcerations. “Thank you to Steve and his team for their vision, to Mecklenburg County and Manager Dena Diorio for their critical financial support, and to an outstanding provider in Daymark for coming alongside us in this important initiative. This is a special project that will be of tremendous value to the members of this community.”
The facility will be the third BHUC Alliance has facilitated. A Durham County BHUC operated by Carolina Outreach opened in 2017, and a Wake County BHUC operated by Monarch opened in 2019.
