Did you know that approximately one-half of African Americans have neutrophil counts that are lower than the normal (Eurocentric) ranges reported by most laboratories? This may be related to a genetic polymorphism. Without any signs or symptoms of infection, the lower ANC is called Benign Ethnic Neutropenia (BEN). Data suggest having BEN does not put patients at risk of severe neutropenia. However, BEN precluded many people from being treated with clozapine due to ANC lower than the specified US FDA monitoring values.
