Alliance Partners to Bring BHUC to Mecklenburg County

Alliance Health is partnering with the Steve Smith Family Foundation, Mecklenburg County Government and Daymark Recovery services to bring a behavioral health urgent care (BHUC) to the citizens of Mecklenburg County.

The facility, which was formally launched in a news conference on January 31, will provide an alternative to the emergency room for adults and children to receive immediate care for behavioral health issues. It is expected to open next January and will be available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Mecklenburg County will provide $2 million for construction of the facility with the Steve Smith Family Foundation and Alliance Health contributing $800,000 each. Daymark Recovery Services, which has three other behavioral health urgent cares in the state, will be the service provider.

Smith, a legendary former wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, said the cause is personal for him. His mother is a survivor of domestic violence, and he is a passionate advocate for domestic violence prevention and mental health resources.

Alliance CEO Rob Robinson said the approach will help to mitigate emergencies tied to mental health as well as prevent incarcerations.

“Thank you to Steve and your team for your vision, to Mecklenburg County and Manager Dena Diorio for your critical financial support, and to an outstanding provider in Daymark for coming alongside us in this important initiative,” Robinson said. “This is a special project that will be of tremendous value to the members of this community.”

The facility will be the third BHUC Alliance has facilitated. A Durham County BHUC operated by Carolina Outreach opened in 2017, and a Wake County BHUC operated by Monarch opened in 2019.
