Stigma is a set of negative and often unfair beliefs that a group of people have about something.

The shame and isolation associated with stigma prevent thousands of people from seeking the help necessary to live healthy and full lives.

Alliance created the It’s Time to Re-Think campaign to raise awareness of the myths and misconceptions that are common in our society about individuals with mental illnesses, substance use disorders and intellectual/developmental disabilities. We hope to help replace myth with truth and the broader understanding that can create communities that welcome individuals into recovery and offer them as much freedom as possible to make their own choices and decisions about how they live their lives.

Stigma is about disrespect and using negative labels to identify a person living with mental illness?

  • Many people would rather tell employers they served jail time than admit to being in a psychiatric hospital?
Stigma can result in inadequate insurance coverage for mental health services?

  • Stigma leads to fear, mistrust and violence against people living with mental illness and their families?
Stigma can cause families and friends to turn their backs on people with mental illness?
